It wouldn’t be the Ekka without a visit to the cake displays and admiring the glass cabinets full of show staples such as traditional scones and fruit cakes to decorated biscuits and decadent rocky roads.

The year’s Ekka Cookery Competition has been judged and ribbons awarded to a wide range of treats from salted caramel patty cakes, melting moments and sponge cakes to intricately decorated wedding cakes and jars of perfect preserves.

When these sweet delights are being scrutinised by the Ekka Stewards, Judges and Associate Judges the key judging criteria is presentation, texture and flavour. Pretty decorations are of little importance, unless in specific cake decorating categories, the officials are purely judging flavour and presentation.

Ekka cooking competitions are open to anyone and there is a wide range of categories to enter your speciality and there is even a junior category for the little bakers aged between 10 and 16.

Take a wander through the lower level of the Royal International Convention Centre and see the cabinets filled with cakes, biscuits, jams and preserves, you never know you may be inspired to enter next year’s Ekka with your recipe that everyone loves.
